Get Involved
We have quietly been making a difference to people’s quality of life for over 170 years.
Why not join us?
A good way of getting actively involved with the Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society and making a practical, direct difference in our beneficiaries’ lives, is to become an Honorary Agent of the Society.
If you would like to act as a visitor or caseworker on our behalf then we would like to hear from you. From time to time, we seek new Honorary Agents to conduct visits and simple casework on our behalf and at present we are looking for volunteers in Southampton, Bristol/Avonmouth, Liverpool and Ayrshire.
What criteria do we look for in our Honorary Agents?
While a maritime background is clearly an advantage it is certainly not a requirement. The sort of person we are seeking is approachable, confident, a good listener and perceptive, sympathetic and discreet.
How does the process work?
- We inform you of a person in need or they contact you
- Visit the person, establish what their need is and complete an application form for assistance
- Forward the completed application to our central office
- The Grants Team check entitlement to state benefits and eligibility
- The Grants Committee consider the case and decide
- Applicant informed of decision with copy letter to the Honorary Agent caseworker.
If we are unable to help then through our experience we may know other organisations that can. We also review our existing regular beneficiaries' circumstances every three years.
How much time does it take?
This depends on the area and the time you have to spare – it’s up to you. Travel to visit beneficiaries is reimbursed at 45p per mile.
A short training session is provided, with travel and accommodation paid for by the Society.
